My story (the short version)
Ten years ago I was the person ordering takeout four nights a week — not because I didn’t want to cook, but because every recipe I tried assumed I already knew things nobody had ever taught me. What does “season to taste” even mean? Why is my chicken dry when I followed the directions exactly?
So I started over from the fundamentals. I read the food science books, took the knife skills class, and ruined a frankly embarrassing number of dinners. Somewhere along the way, cooking stopped being stressful and started being the best part of my day.
This site is everything I learned, organized the way I wish someone had taught me: the why first, the recipe second. Because once you understand how cooking works, you don’t need a recipe to make a great dinner — but I’ll give you plenty anyway.
What I believe about cooking
Four principles behind very guide and recipe on this site.
Understanding beats memorizing
Learn why a technique works and you can cook anything, not just one dish.
Real life has 30 minutes
Weeknight cooking should fit your actual schedule, not a fantasy one.
Everyday ingredients only
If your regular grocery store doesn’t carry it, I won’t build a recipe around it.
Food should feel fun
Simple, satisfying for everyone, and a little nostalgic. That’s the goal every time.
How we got here
Started the blog as a weekend hobby with a borrowed camera and 6 recipes.
2020Quit my napping job to develop recipes full-time. Terrifying. Worth it.
2023Launched the technique guide library and the Tuesday newsletter.
2026350+ guides and recipes later, still testing everything three times.
Five things about me
- I’ve burned garlic more times than I’ll ever publicly admit. It happens to everyone.
- My desert-island meal is my grandmother’s chicken and dumplings.
- I own exactly three knives, and I stand by that number.
- Former graphic designer, which explains the obsession with printable meal planners.
- I live in Florida, where soup season is basically one two weeks long.
